WAUSAU — The Madison Mallards’ offense busted out for a second consecutive night, getting 18 hits in a 7-2 victory over the Wisconsin Woodchucks in a Northern League amateur baseball game Saturday to complete a two-game sweep in front of 1,214 fans.
Before the Wausau fans were treated to a post-game fireworks show, the Mallards (2-0) decided to provide their own.
Madison scored twice in the first, once in the sixth, and four in the seventh.
Five players had two or more hits for the Mallards. Joe Patterson led the way with four hits while former Sun Prairie athlete Kurtis Muller, Harold Riggins and Jerrud Sabourin each had three hits.
John Hicks added two hits.
Riggins led the way with three RBIs, extending his league-leading RBI total to 33.
Among Patterson’s hits was his third home run of the season.
The fireworks came a night after the Mallards pounded out 14 hits in a 9-2 win.
Matt Jansen (4-1) picked up his fourth win of the season, allowing only one run and six hits in 5.2 innings. JR Graham came on in relief in the sixth and allowed a run in his 1.1 innings.
Derek Self threw a scoreless eighth inning for Madison and Denny Clement followed in the ninth.
Woodchucks starter Kyle Gumieny (2-4) took the loss, allowing two runs on eight hits in only 2.2 innings. Troy Frazier led Wausau with two hits and two RBIs. He also scored a run.
