MILWAUKEE — Milwaukee Brewers general manager Doug Melvin isn’t happy about some recent remarks made by left fielder Ryan Braun.
After an 8-2 loss Sunday to the Chicago Cubs, who took three of four from Milwaukee in the series, Braun implored Melvin to make a trade for a pitcher as soon as possible. He also said Chicago’s starting pitchers were “a lot better than ours.”
“They threw the ball a lot better than our starters did,” Braun said. “All four guys we saw in this series are No. 1, worst-case, No. 2-type starters. They make big pitches in big situations. You’re not always going to get hits in those situations.”
Melvin took offense.
“It was inappropriate for him to say what he said, and I’m not happy about it,” Melvin said Monday.
“To make the statements he made and also get on his teammates like that, it was irresponsible on his part. It just ticked me off.”
Melvin said it wasn’t appropriate for Braun to make unflattering comparisons between the Brewers’ starting rotation and Chicago’s, considering that two spots in the Milwaukee rotation have been in flux with Dave Bush on the disabled list and Manny Parra sent to Class AAA Nashville.
“I think he made a fundamental mistake,” Melvin said of Braun. “I didn’t hear our pitchers complaining when we lost a 1-0 game (to the New York Mets last Wednesday) or the 2-1 game in 10 innings in Chicago (on Friday).
“They didn’t say the hitters weren’t doing their job. He’s hitting in front of one of the best hitters (Prince Fielder) in the game.”
Melvin said he already was upset about derogatory comments by Braun about the hitting conditions at Miller Park during day games, where shadows make it tough. Braun said players “hope for rain and clouds” so the retractable roof will be closed during day games there.
Melvin also mentioned comments he read from Braun about Milwaukee hitters not having scouting reports on San Francisco newcomer Ryan Sadowski, who shut out the Brewers for six innings in a 7-0 defeat June 28. Melvin said the team did have scouting reports on Sadowski, and indicated Braun needs to be careful what he says.
“I’ll be glad to have Ryan help if he wants to. I’ll give him a badge and he can be my deputy,” Melvin said. “I don’t know his motivation for saying it. It demoralizes the people in the organization at a time when we should be pulling together. It puts a bad taste in our mouths. That’s a pretty strong statement.
“I understand that maybe he thinks it’s taking a leadership role. I don’t know if he’s trying to tell me I’m not doing my job. We need to stick together as an organization. We’re all trying to win.”
