Woman killed in crash in Mazomanie identified; had prior drunken-driving convictions
By SANDY CULLEN

The woman killed in a two-car crash Monday afternoon in the town of Mazomanie has been identified as Diana S. Griffin, 51, of Black Earth, the Dane County Sheriff’s Office said.

Sheriff’s spokeswoman Elise Schaffer said Griffin was intoxicated when her Chevrolet Malibu crossed the center line while traveling north on Highway 78, narrowly missed an oncoming semitruck, then hit a Mazda pick-up truck, seriously injuring a passenger.

Griffin was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash that happened at about 2 p.m. about one mile south of Highway Y.

The passenger in the pick-up truck, Sharon L. Rogers, 65, of Sterling, Ill., was taken by helicopter to UW Hospital with serious injuries but is expected to survive, Schaffer said. She was in fair condition Tuesday. Her husband, Joseph A. Rogers, 46, who was driving, was less seriously injured. He also remains in UW Hospital, hospitalized, but his condition was not immediately available.

According to online court records, Griffin was convicted twice of drunken driving. In one of those incidents, in February 2005, she also was convicted of hit and run. In that incident, Griffin had a blood alcohol content of 0.283 percent, more than three times the legal limit of 0.08, according to a criminal complaint.
