Madison man charged with 13 felonies for allegedly running cockfights

A Madison man was charged Friday with 13 felonies for allegedly running cockfights at his Moorland Road home.

Jorge L. Iglesias, 47, was charged with 12 counts of instigating fights between animals and one count of maintaining a place for animal fights. He was ordered to appear in court on Monday.

According to a criminal complaint, a city building inspector was checking Iglesias’ property at 1241 Moorland Road on June 16 after complaints about crowing roosters. The inspector and Lisa Juday, humane officer for the city-county health department, suspected that Iglesias was violating a city ordinance that allows residents to have up to four chickens, the complaint states.

According to the complaint:

Juday, who investigated cockfighting while she was a humane officer in California, saw a cockfighting rooster through an open coop door. The rooster had been plucked or shaved of feathers on its legs, front, neck and head, in preparation for fighting. The plucking prevents the rooster from overheating during prolonged fights.

The rooster’s comb and wattles were also removed, along with the natural spurs near its feet. In place of the spurs, sharp instruments are often attached to the bird’s legs for a fight.

Police obtained a search warrant and found 35 game cocks on the property, along with other cockfighting paraphernalia, including a jug of blood iron booster, syringes and alcohol bottles. A disassembled fighting pit and plastic cockfighting spurs were also found.
