Man killed in apparent hit-and-run on Southwest Side identified
The man killed in the Saturday evening pedestrian hit-and-run has been identified as 19-year-old Larry D. Caraway of Madison.
Caraway sustained major internal trauma in the collision and was pronounced dead at the scene, said the Dane County Coroner.
The accident occurred at around 10:45 p.m. in the northbound lanes of Verona Road at Raymond Road.
Justin Jafferis, 23, said he was going north on Verona Road and came upon the scene of the accident only seconds after it happened. He said another car was stopped as well and he asked people who had seen the accident if CPR had been performed.
Makeitah Pullen, 20, was turning left from Raymond onto Verona when she "saw (another motorist) jumping out of the car; then I saw (the victim) laying there and I stopped." She said the victim had been walking and had been with four other people.
Northbound Verona Road at Raymond Road was shut down for more than an hour and a half after the crash as police tried to reconstruct what happened. A sheet-covered body lay on the road as police talked with witnesses, and a group of about 15 or 20 of the victim’s family and friends were on the scene and gathered at a nearby gas station. Several of them declined to speak with a reporter.
Sgt. Tim Radke said police were looking for a vehicle related to the accident.
