Student honors: Alison Schwartz of Madison, a medical student at the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in Erie, Pa., was recently recognized for community service she performed through the TOUCH program — Translating Osteopathic Understanding into Community Health.

Louisa Kornblatt, daughter of Judith and Marc Kornblatt of Madison and a student at Madison West, was one of 26 high school students selected from 12 states and Canada to travel and study in Israel this summer as part of the Bronfman Youth Fellowship program. North American students participated in seminars with rabbinic faculty and spent a week with a group of Israeli students also chosen for the program, which was designed to develop Jewish community leaders.
A team of students from Waunakee High School took third place in the 2009 “Design Your School” competition, sponsored by the American Institute of Architects. Students Tyler Burkholder, Alex Dorn, John Lowell, Mike North and Luke Pandow created a sustainable school design that netted the school a cash prize and third-place honors.

Scholarships: Tess Becker, a graduate of Monona Grove High School, was recently granted a $4,800 Betty Lou Scholarship. The scholarship is a memorial established by the sons of Betty von Rutenberg, who are local business owners, in conjunction with TEMPO of Madison, an organization to which Betty von Rutenberg belonged.
Eleven area high school graduates have received scholarships from the Thomas B. Jones and Grace Stevenson Jones Charitable Foundation. They are Grace Coyne of Barneveld; Danielle Brown and Melissa Ray, both of Dodgeville; Lynsey Esser and Jennifer Johanning, both of Highland; and Dana Gevelinger, Chelsey Walker, Blake Berning, Kimberly Bertram, Ethan Martin and Kacy Sporle, all of Mineral Point. The foundation was established by the Jones family, who’d lived in Platteville since 1939.

Donation: The Wood Cycle, an Oregon business that reclaims hardwoods for cabinetry and furniture, recently donated $2,160 to the Brooklyn-Oregon Habitat for Humanity chapter to support the construction of a four-unit condo in Oregon. The donation represents a percentage of sales during the opening of the Hayloft Gallery and Showroom, a restored barn moved to the Wood Cycle farmstead last year.

Class reunions: The Norway Grove Grade School reunion will be held on  Sept. 13 at the Arlington Community Center, 200 Commercial Drive, beginning with a potluck dinner at noon. The DeForest High School Class of 1956 will get together at the Sunset Grill on Highway V outside of DeForest on Sept. 19. The social hour begins at 4 p.m., followed by dinner at 6 p.m. For information, call Ron or Lou Ann (Grinde) Ellingson at 608-873-8816.
