Wisconsin National Guard soldiers are confronted by actors in Arab dress in a mock Iraqi village at their Camp McGregor, N.M., training ground. Soldiers have seconds to decide who is friendly, hostile or armed. Before this exercise ended, villagers rioted and a sniper attacked. Trainers say their goal is to make the soldiers familiar with high-stress situations they may face overseas. Wisconsin National Guard Pfc. Aaron Nieman of Edgar won't escape the chokehold demonstrated by training partner Spc. Carl Seim. For safety, soldiers are taught how to signal when they start blacking out. Dog-tired Private Amanda Culley, 19, of Luxemburg rises from a low spot on the Camp McGregor, N.M., live ammunition range before dashing to the next available cover. Camp McGregor, N.M., trainers hire actors to play villagers in combat simulation drills. Jennifer Van Kirk of Brookfield joined in the exercise while visiting as part of a tour of volunteers and employers. She is a Wisconsin National Guard volunteer trained to help families of deployed soldiers.
