Beth Dumont, left, a UW-Madison genetics researcher, and genetics student Lauren Brooks check out one of the mice they captured on the Biocore Prairie last week as part of a study comparing wild rodents with their lab counterparts. Beth Dumont, a UW-Madison genetics researcher, is spending part of her summer studying differences between lab mice and those in the wild.
Plastic containers, scientists know, are handy for more than just leftovers. Beth Dumont used them to hold mice she had captured. Powerful microscopes allow a glimpse of genetic activity inside mice cells. A special stain highlights the pink chromosomes in the cell as well as the dots that represent regions in which genetic material is being changed and recombined to make new genes.
