Upstairs near the Crestwood Elementary School gym, adults moved quickly through short lunch hour polling lines Tuesday, but they weren't as fast as the kids who were voting in two rooms downstairs.

Crestwood on Madison's West Side was one of roughly 40 Dane County middle and elementary schools that participated in a program run by the county clerk's office called Kids Vote Too. With half of the schools reporting, 76 percent voted for Barack Obama, 22 percent for John McCain and another 2 percent for other candidates.

Eddie Chen, 5, said he made his decision because "I liked Obama because I saw him on TV." His kindergarten classmate Charlie Anderson said he knew who to choose, "because I know who my mom picked."

Maggie Lohmann, 10, wished her vote counted in the official tally: "It is our future, we should have a say in it. When you're still growing and choosing your path is when it matters most."

Children have proved an accurate reflections of election results.

Scholastic News magazine has conducted a national poll open to students in grades 1 to 12 since 1940, and the results have mirrored the general election outcome in all but two elections. This year, Obama won with 57 percent of the vote, with a record number (4 percent) of write-in votes. Popular write-in candidates included comedian Stephen Colbert and teen singer Miley Cyrus.
