Columbia County: No time to recover

Columbia County was just recovering from a tornado and heavy storms when more flooding hit the county earlier this month.

The June 7 tornado cut a mile-wide path from east of Portage to Pardeeville and southeast across the county line at Highway G. The following week, more heavy rain fell, causing flooding throughout the county that left the Fall River lift station underwater and not functioning for about four days.

In Pardeeville, officials created a path using heavy-duty plastic and sandbags to channel rising water from the village's Park Lake.

While the communities of Pardeeville and Columbus were heavily hit, many parts of the county experienced serious flooding damage.

"We don't have a municipality hardly that wasn't affected in some way or other," said Kathy Johnson, Columbia County deputy emergency management director.

By the numbers:

4,000 feet of water-main bag plastic used to create path for Park Lake water
$4 million+ for residential property damage
$2 million in infrastructure damage
