Crawford County: Not again!

The floodwaters of the Kickapoo River have largely receded. To drive down Main Street in Gays Mills, you'd hardly know now that only weeks ago there'd been a flood that submerged the area under about four feet of water, said Roger Martin, Crawford County's director of emergency management.

Still, after this second major flood in 10 months, there are ongoing discussions about possibly relocating the village of 625 people. Asked whether this might spell the end of the town, village president Larry McCarn said, "It could be."

The county recorded about 5.5 inches of rain but sustained widespread flooding because of heavier rains upriver in Monroe and Vernon counties. Steuben and Soldiers Grove were also hard hit.

About 150 homes in all three towns were evacuated at the height of flooding. "Some (people) have not returned and have not decided at this point if they're going to return," Martin said.

By the numbers:

57: number of homes with major damage (none destroyed)
150: number of homes evacuated
$800,000: estimated damage to county roads, culverts and bridges
