The Rock and Crawfish rivers continued to rise in this county even as waters throughout other flooded areas of the state began to recede. Especially hard-hit was the southern portion of Jefferson County, including the cities of Fort Atkinson and Jefferson and the Lake Koshkonong area. "There are homes that are still not accessible," Gary Petre, Jefferson County administrator, said Tuesday. "The people in the southern area of the county are still waiting for that water to recede."
The Rock River finally crested in Fort Atkinson on June 21 at 10.85 feet and in Jefferson on June 18 at 15.64 feet. In Jefferson two main bridges through town were still closed as of Tuesday, dividing the city and forcing people to drive sometimes 20 miles out of their way to get a few blocks.
And although the rivers have crested, the water is receding slowly and it could be a while before officials can inspect and open the bridges.
By the numbers:
800+ homes flooded in the county
20 square blocks throughout the city of Jefferson flooded
400+ workers temporarily laid off when two manufacturing plants closed because of high water
in the city of Jefferson
