Authorities on Saturday continued a manhunt for Charles E. Witzel, suspected in a Cross Plains shooting Friday that left a man dead and a woman critically injured.
Meanwhile, residents of Cross Plains and neighboring Black Earth are trying to deal with the tragedy.
"People just don't expect things like this to be happening in Cross Plains, but these things happen everywhere," Cross Plains Police Chief Tom Janssen said Saturday, noting the last homicide in the village occurred in the 1800s.
Dead is Craig A. Severson, 45, of Cross Plains. Lisa M. Morgan, 27, also of Cross Plains, remained in critical condition at an area hospital.
The two were shot at a two-story apartment building at 2530 Valley St. about 2:16 p.m. Friday, police said. Dane County Coroner John Stanley on Saturday said Severson died due to "multiple gunshot wounds."
A 1-year-old child related to at least one of the victims was in the apartment at the time of the shooting but was unharmed.
Witzel, 42, described as white, 6 feet tall and 180 pounds with blue eyes and long brown hair, abandoned his pickup truck in Middleton and may now be traveling in a silver 1992 Toyota pickup truck with Wisconsin license plate number EV4861, police said Saturday. The registered owner of the vehicle is not connected to the investigation, police said.
The suspect is considered armed and dangerous, police said.
The victims knew Witzel and were targeted by him, police said.
"I can't say nobody else is in danger," Janssen said. "I can say, to our knowledge, no one else is in immediate danger."
On Saturday afternoon, several Dane County Sheriff's deputy cars were at the crime scene, a cream-colored building with brown shutters set amid other apartments and single-family homes just outside the center of the village.
Witzel has ties to Arena and Loganville, police said.
"We're still looking into things," Janssen said. "We're still tracking down leads."
Severson worked for J.H. Findorff & Son construction company in Madison and Morgan works at the Kwik Trip in Cross Plains, friends said.
"I've known Craig for 20 years," said Arlene Dahmen, owner of Main Street Lanes in Cross Plains, adding that her son, Randy, worked with Severson and was his close friend. "I don't think it's hit (Randy) yet."
"They did everything together," she said. "They went hunting together. Four-wheeling, Go-karting."
Dahmen said she didn't know Witzel.
Boots Lawler, a Black Earth resident, said he grew up with Severson.
"I was shocked," he said of the slaying. "For a small town, it's a shock.
"It's sad," he said. "He was a nice guy. He was a typical person. Everybody has their problems, but he was always there for his kid."
Andrew Stuttgen, manager at Kwik Trip, said he's known Morgan for about two years.
"Lisa is always outgoing, always friendly with everybody," he said. "Everybody knew her."
Stuttgen said he'd never heard of Witzel before the shooting.
In 2005, Witzel was convicted in Dane County Circuit Court of carrying a concealed weapon. In 2006, he was charged in Iowa County Circuit Court with five counts including first-degree recklessly endangering safety and intentionally pointing a firearm at someone but was convicted of lesser charges. A judge sentenced him to 12 months probation. He also is facing sentencing in a third-offense drunk driving case in Iowa County.
Witzel most recently lived with a roommate in Sauk County and had broken up with a girlfriend about a year ago, his brother, Christopher Witzel said.
Authorities are asking anyone with information related to the whereabouts of Charles Witzel to immediately call 911 or the Sheriff's office at 608-255-2345.
