Guardian of the bridge: Tom Beane in Jefferson
Tom Beane spent six days guarding the Wisconsin Bridge in Jefferson, keeping traffic off the closed bridge, guiding motorists to alternative routes and even helping reunite children with their families after they were separated by the rising water. Flume river: Dave Tracey in Pardeeville
Public Works director Dave Tracey helped create and build an artificial stream to divert water and keep Park Lake from draining. Lives and records saved: Skip and Judy Watkins in Rock Springs
Volunteer fire captain Skip Watkins and his wife, Judy, sandbagged for hours, only to have to switch gears as water rose faster than sandbags could contain it, instead evacuating people and moving documents to save them. William Halbach and Kyle Morse worked 27 hours straight at their summer jobs as drivers with the Original Ducks in the Wisconsin Dells, evacuating people and pets in Baraboo and then volunteering to stay at the Baraboo Fire Station through the night to have Ducks available for additional rescue missions.
Grandma's slumber party: Pat Ostrander in Muscoda
When she heard residents were being evacuated from neighboring Avoca, Ostrander showed up at the shelter and took three elderly women home with her, cheering them up and allowing them to avoid a night on shelter cots.
