Sgt. John Kriesel, here with his two sons, Elijah, left, and Broden, lost his legs  in a roadside bomb attack while patrolling near Fallujah, Iraq, in December 2006. Kriesel received his Purple Heart after being badly injured in the roadside bomb attack, in which two members of his team were killed. Sgt. J.R. Salzman, a five-time world log rolling champion, lost his right arm when his Humvee was hit by EFP, an explosively formed penetrator, while leading a fuel tanker convoy back to the Tallil Air Base, in Iraq. He's pictured here with his wife, Josie. Sgt. John Kriesel came close to dying in the explosion that took his legs. He hardly had a day without surgery in the days after the attack.
