Hawks, such as this one, have been burned by perching on the methane burners in landfills. Milton raptor rehabilitator Dianne Moller eventually traced the mysterious causes of hawks with scorched feathers to methane burners such as this one in the Janesville municipal landfill. The solution proved to be attaching steel spikes to the burners to keep the birds from perching.
