The glow of the village of Lone Rock, adjacent to the Wisconsin River, is seen from about 10 miles.

The low-key lighting of the new fire station in Spring Green is an example of positive efforts to reduce the night-time glare of outdoor lighting.

Timm Zumm, who has long been active on natural resource protection issues along the Lower Wisconsin River, is now working on a proposal to reduce unnecessary outdoor lighting and keep the night skies above the river dark.

A recently installed streetlight shows how reducing the size of the traditional globe and recessing the light into the fixture reduces the amount of light escaping into the sky.
