Connecting with nature means cold fingers for Spring Harbor Middle School seventh grader Letisha McKnight at Lake Mendota on a frigid December morning. She is dumping out the water to take a fresh sample to get one without any air bubbles. Back in their cozy classroom, Spring Habor seventh graders Nathan Barge, left, Keng Thao, Will Caldwell and Alex Zhu test their Lake Mendota water samples. Teacher David Ropa's seventh grade science class takes water samples from Lake Mendota's Spring Harbor boat landing. Ropa used a sledgehammer to break holes in the ice. The school focuses upon environmental science ? and it's so popular there's a waiting list of 200 students.
