Ethics Symposium: The Rotary Club of Madison-Downtown Chapter, will host its ninth annual Ethics Symposium on Friday from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Monona Terrace. Nearly 200 students from 12 area high schools are expected to attend.
Tom Bier, station manager and former news director for WISC (Ch.3) will lead one seminar which will feature news footage and discussion regarding news coverage. Other sessions include ethics in advertising, sports, Internet use, bullying and more.
First Wave, a group of UW-Madison students, will present "Spoken Word Performance of Ethical Dilemmas," vignettes to promote self-examination of biases.

Honors: Two area students, Jordyn Schara of North Freedom, a student at Webb Middle School in Reedsburg, and Jasmin Weger, a student at Lancaster High School, have been named Wisconsin’s top youth volunteers for 2009 by the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, sponsored by Prudential Financial and the National Association of Secondary School Principals.
As state honorees, each student will receive $1,000, a silver medallion and a trip in May to Washington, D.C., to meet the other state winners, tour the city and participate in recognition events. Ten students will then be named America’s top youth volunteers for 2009.
Jordyn was nominated for her work collecting nearly a ton of reading materials for military personnel in her community who are serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. Jasmin raised more than $7,600 to purchase seven Jaws of Life suitsfor the Lancaster Volunteer Fire Department.
Six more state students were named distinguished finalists: Katherine Cloninger of Weyauwega; Chelsea Match of Thiensville; Kyra Sommerfeld of Chippewa Falls; Zachary Swiatko of Kenosha; Laura Turner of Elm Grove and Deena Whitwam of New Richmond.
