A wood-burning stove might be to blame for a fire that killed one person early Thursday near Evansville. The identity and gender of the victim have not been confirmed.
Firefighters from Evansville, Brooklyn and Stoughton were called shortly after 2:30 a.m. to 8441 N. Highway 14, a 12-unit trailer park about a half-mile north of Evansville. While en route, firefighters learned that someone was in the trailer but arrived to find the trailer engulfed in flames. After the fire was extinguished, firefighters found a body near the bedroom.
An investigator said an autopsy likely will be held today in Madison and that dental records will be needed to make a positive identification.
"It’s pretty common for us to go through an autopsy," said Capt. Jude Maurer of the Rock County Sheriff’s Office. "It doesn’t appear to be suspicious but since there was a death, we want to ensure there was no foul play."
The incident is the second fatal fire in southern Wisconsin trailer parks this week. On Monday, the bodies of David L. Schinn, 57, and Joyce M. Schinn, 55, were found inside their mobile home in Bagley, along the Mississippi River in Grant County. Officials say a space heater started the fire that was reported by a passer-by shortly before 4:30 a.m.
