FITCHBURG - Police put out a national alert Saturday for a 49-year-old Verona man believed to be the main suspect in the shooting of a woman at her Fitchburg apartment.
The woman, whose name was not released, was taken to UW Hospital in Madison after the shooting at 5152 Anton Drive about 6 p.m. Lt. Chad Brecklin said about 10:45 p.m. that she had “significant life-threatening injuries.”
Brecklin said police believe there was a domestic relationship between the woman and the alleged shooter, Steve J. Weber.
“We believe that the victim was targeted,” he said.
Police said Weber drove to the woman’s apartment in the New Fountains apartment complex in a black Chevy pickup truck with Wisconsin plates AB6336.
He was described as white, about 5-foot-7 inches and 190 pounds and at the time of the shooting was reportedly wearing a jean jacket and light-colored blue jeans. Police said he is considered armed and dangerous.
According to court records, Weber and a woman whose home address was the same as the site of the shooting finalized their divorce Monday. The State Journal is not naming the woman because police have not confirmed her identity.
The woman had filed for divorce from Weber in February 2008 and Weber was under a restraining order not to be on Anton Drive, according to a separate criminal case filed against him in January.
Court records also show that Weber has a criminal history in Dane County dating to 1989, including convictions for weapon-related charges.
The most recent charges against him were filed Jan. 5 and include two felony charges of strangulation and suffocation and one each of child abuse and disarming a police officer. He was due back in court Thursday for a status hearing.
