Honors: Catholic Knights Branch 88 of Madison was selected from among the organization’s 142 branches to receive the Community Service Award for outreach services at their recent volunteer celebration. Branch 88 sponsored activities for seniors at “Join Hands Day” events, filled backpacks for the police department-sponsored “Backpacks of Books” program, served dinner at St. Martin House as well as sponsoring a variety of fundraisers.

Catholic Knights is a faith-based financial services group based in Milwaukee.

Scholarships: The Madison West Lions Club recently awarded six scholarships to local 2009 high school graduates. They are Rachel Becker of Edgewood High School, Juliette Walker of Madison Memorial and Linda Ream of Madison West, all of whom received Harold Wetzel Memorial scholarships. Laine Smith, Valerie Chesnik and Christina Kranz, all active members of Madison West High’s LEO service club, sponsored by the Lions, also received scholarships.

Two Madison students have received $4,000 Gordon J. Flesch Scholarships. They are Samuel Keepman, son of Mike and Kris Keepman of Madison and a UW-Madison microbiology student; and Kyle Emmert, son of Brad and Rita Emmert of Madison and a history and Spanish major at UW-La Crosse. The scholarships were established in 1995 to assist children of Gordon Flesch Co. employees.

Two area college students have received $2,000 Agricultural Education Scholarships, earmarked for children of dairy producer member-owners, from Foremost Farms USA. The students are Thomas Statz of Loganville, a student at Southwest Wisconsin Technical College in Fennimore, and Patrick Maier of Waunakee, a student at UW-Platteville.

Class Reunions: The McFarland High School Class of 1989 will hold its 20th reunion this weekend. An informal gathering including all McFarland graduates and teachers will be held Friday evening at Crapp’s McFarland Tavern, 5915 Exchange St. On Saturday, classmates from 1989 will meet at the Bourbon Street Grille, 6312 Metropolitan Lane, for cocktails, dinner and dancing, beginning at 6 p.m. For information, e-mail mcfclassof89@yahoo.com.

Graduates, parents, coaches and faculty of Queen of Apostles High School are invited to meet at the main tent during the St. Dennis Parish Festival on Sunday, July 26, to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the closing of the school.

An “Outfly picnic” for students, alumni, parents and friends of Wartburg College, Waverly, Iowa, will be held at 6 p.m. July 29 at the home of Jack and Sarah Salzwedel, 5117 St. Cyr Road, Middleton. Darrel Colson, the new college president, will attend, and food, beverages and souvenirs will be provided. The Madison East High School Class of 1949 will hold its 60-year reunion from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 29 at the Madison Elks Lodge, 711 Jenifer St. Contact Beverly Sime Quale at 608-221-2184 for information.

Members of the Class of 1959 from Campion, St. Mary’s Academy and Prairie du Chien High School will hold a joint 50th reunion over Labor Day weekend. Events include a Friday evening gathering at the Eagle’s Club, dinner at The Barn Restaurant on Saturday ($25 each) and a Sunday brunch ($5.50 each). Military Reunion: The USS Mount McKinley Association will hold a reunion Sept. 9-13 in Corpus Christi, Texas, for veterans of all branches of the military who served on the amphibious force flagship USS Mount McKinley AGC/LCC-7, and new members from the flagship Alliance group who served any time during their commissioned service.
